THE BAY LEAF JOURNEY
Bay Leaf is an exciting new venture for Aftab Rahman, who is also joint owner of Mint Indian and Bangladeshi Cuisine in Yardley, Birmingham. With a passion for authentic Bangladeshi food and the arts, Aftab has drawn his inspiration for Bay Leaf from his life in Birmingham and his Bangladeshi heritage.
Bay Leaf is situated in the heart of Birmingham's Custard Factory, the city's growing independent sector. It offers an alternative to many of the city's restaurant with its commitment to provide quality authentic Bangladeshi food, which is organic where possible.
Bay Leaf's menus have been inspired by food that would be eaten in a Bangladeshi home. The menus, encompassing brunch, lunch/snacks and dinner, combine fresh British ingredients with a western twist. A handful of traditional dishes are on offer to keep curry lovers happy. But those looking for a red Chicken Tikka Masala will be disappointed, as no food colouring is used in any of our foods. Instead we have added the colour to our service!
Bay Leaf is the first Bangladeshi restaurant to open for breakfast, offering a spicy alternative. The inspiration for the cafe area has been taken from the famous 'Coffee House at College Street' in Kolkata (Calcutta). It is hoped that this area will be a place where Birmingham's great minds will meet and engage in debate, discussion and action. This cafe area is ideal for events or private dining.
Bay Leaf's bar is the ideal place to enjoy pre-dinner drinks and after-dinner coffee, or to simply sit and relax and watch the world go by. Adjacent to the bar and facing the main dining area, live music will be a regular fixture.
In the main dining area, life-size photographs of Bangladesh, taken by Aftab, provide a glimpse of day to day life in this enchanting country. The wall poetry is by Rabindranath Tagore, a Bengali poet, novelist, musician, painter and playwright who reshaped Bengali literature and music.
